Grand Opening Giveaway- Day Four

Today's interview and giveaway is with Mandy of Whimsiedots
Her shop is amazing... no idea how she has time to run her shop and home school her FIVE kids! Amazing!

How long have you been collecting vintage sheets?

I have been collecting vintage sheets for around 5 years now-and still get giddy every time that I get to go hunting for more! I am not sure I will ever tire of it.

How long have you been selling vintage sheets?

I have been selling Vintage sheets for around 4 years now. It didn't take long after I opened Whimsie Dots, to get the bug for passing them on. Selling them gives me the chance to play with combinations I may not have the time to use myself. It is now a very large part of my work, I take in around 20-30 new sheets a week, and cut between 150-250 fat quarters from that.

What or Who inspired you to use vintage sheets in your projects?

It really came from necessity at first. My husband is a youth pastor and when we were fresh out of school, starting at our first church, and had just started our family with the first of our five kiddos, there was nothing in the budget for sewing at all. So fabric had to go along way for a very minimal cost. That is where thrifting for vintage sheets and I met and became quick friends. I first started using sheets to back my quilts but that changed very quickly when I began really seeing them as incredible possibilities for unique fabric. Rarely do I even step foot in a fabric store now! The thrift store IS my favorite fabric store. So, I guess you would say that necessity opened a whole new world to me. It has been pretty cool to see how the Lord took some of our struggles and turned them into such a fun journey for me.

How many vintage sheets do you have right now?

Hum? Well, I am almost a bit embarrassed to answer that-but at least I have a business selling them, that makes it alright, right? I have somewhere around 300 in my personal collection at any given time. But in defense, that is not necessarily entire sheets. I usually only keep around a yard of a print and the rest goes into bundles in the shop. But, like I mentioned earlier, I bring in about 20-30 a week that get bundled for the shop, so my collection changes quite often. The first picture is of my fat quarter wall for the shop, the second picture is of my personal collection.

Any fun projects planned using VS?

Oh, there is always something new waiting to get made, and it doesn't help at all when I have fabulous customers like Anne from Pins and Thimbles, that inspire new ideas constantly! But for as many quilts I have made with vintage sheets, I have never made one for myself. I am hoping to sometime this year to begin working on one for our bedroom.

How long have you been sewing?

Wow-somewhere around 20 years now. I am not sure what age I was, but I was young enough to still be playing with Barbies:) I use to make clothes for them. When I was old enough to get a job, I started working at fabric stores which helped give me so much of my basic knowledge-there was always an older women who wanted to teach me something new. And if you haven't already noticed, women that work in fabric stores are charmingly eccentric which added so much to my story! It was a mixed blessing though, being amongst all that fabric with all the ideas swimming around my head everyday usually meant my paycheck went right back to the store. It has been a good thing to run my own unique fabric store;)-I get to keep my paycheck and my fabric too!

Do you have a fav vs print?

That is a tough question. I think I would have to say it is more of a color combination for me. I love the lemons and limes colored prints. Those have been my favorites to quilt with. The greens are always hard to come by it seems. So if I can find a green print, I am a very happy girl! Or POLKA DOTS(vintage of course).

Any prints you are coveting at the moment?

Again, that is hard to choose. I am always on the hunt for vintage prints with vibrant and bold designs. I always makes me a bit sad when the last of a good print is used up, that is the only time I wish that vintage sheets were sold by the bolt!

Now On to the Giveaway: Please leave a separate comment for each item you complete. You can do one or all of these things.  You Will receive 11 pretty Fat Quarters!  I am pretty sad I can not win any of these yummy give aways:( SNIFF

I have TWO favorites from her shop!
First off, http://www.etsy.com/listing/45073133/42-reclaimed-bed-linen-quilt-squares-12 because stripes just make me smile.

Now, my second choice, and why I have to HAVE a second choice. While looking through all these beautiful sheets she has saved, I spotted these: http://www.etsy.com/listing/44847308/reclaimed-vintage-bed-linens-fat-quarter
and I got a little tingle in my tummy because these are the EXACT sheets that my grandmother (passed away at 84 on Christmas 2004) put on the bed that I slept in at her house when I stayed there to visit. It made me think of her and all my warm memories with her. She's the reason I've learned to sew and seeing those just made me really smile...and my heart, too =)

LOVE ALL HER STUFF, I have gotten quite a few bundles from her shop, I love the way she bundles things by color, also love the fact that she will specifically pick out things for you. I wanted some pinks and browns so I contacted Amanda and got this awesome bundle that I used in the quilt I will post a photo of on the flickr group tonight when I get home from work and I am working on another quilt as we speak. So hope to have that one done soon too.
