I'm so excited to tell you guys about a wonderful blog called Retro Revival that I discovered earlier this Summer. Cindy has a wonderful humorous approach to sharing her adventures in handmade and vintage treasures. Her photos are eye candy and her recipes are sweet.
Cindy not only has a fun and easy tutorial to share with us, she also has a sweet treat for one lucky Vintage Sheet Blog reader.
Pot Mitts Made from Vintage Sheets
(Pot Mitts ~ pot holders + oven mitts in one!)
Itchin’ to
do some stitchin’ with your vintage sheets?
I’ve made all sorts of goodies from my vintage linens, and today I’d
like to share one of my more recent projects ~ Pot Mitts! If you’d like to give ‘em a try, here’s how…
1.
Choose a favorite vintage sheet or pillowcase
from your stash. In this case, I used a
pillowcase and cut the seams so I had a big rectangular piece of fabric.
2.
For each Pot Mitt, you’ll want to cut 3 circles
of your fabric. I cut 2 from my vintage
pillow case and a 3rd from a coordinating, new fabric. You’ll also need to cut 2 circles of InsulBright. Cut your circles as big or as small as you’d
like, and use whatever you have on hand as a template; I used my grandmother’s
mixing bowl.
3.
Chose one of your circles and cut it in
half. This piece will become the pocket
for your Pot Mitt.
4.
Choose a coordinating color of double bias tape
and stitch it along the straight edge of your pocket piece.
5.
Pin together a sandwich of all of your
pieces. Place a full circle, right side
out, down. Next, add your 2 pieces of
InsulBright, making sure the shiny sides are facing out. Then add your 2nd full circle
piece, right side out, and finally, add your ½ circle piece on top of that.
(Here you can see the shiny (left piece) vs. duller sides of
the InsulBright.)
6.
Stitch all around your Pot Mitt sandwich.
7.
Trim any excess fabric as close as you can to
your stitching.
8.
Next, sew double bias tape all around your Pot
Mitt.
9.
Then, take another, small piece of double bias
tape and stitch it closed; this will become your tab.
10.
Fold this small piece of tape in half and stitch
it onto your Pot Mitt.
11.
That’s it!
Well, you’ll probably want to whip up a culinary feast as an excuse to
use them, but not until you’ve taken some time to ooh and aah over your
creation! And take lots of pictures!
Thanks so much, Cindy, for the great tutorial.
Hey, guess what, Cindy has a pair of her strawberry vintage sheet pot mitts for one lucky Vintage Sheet Blog reader.
