How to Make a Really Ugly Ugly Sweater

You should receive an invitation to an ugly sweater party any day now and with this tutorial, you will be prepared.

I'm amazed at how popular the ugly sweater theme has become. I found this at Hobby Lobby. They had matching plates and napkins, too.

I bought this at the drug store. I feel a family ugly sweater cookie decorating contest coming on.

It's getting harder and harder to score a really good ugly sweater. Sure, you could go online and buy an expensive ugly sweater. Or, you could go to the thrift shop and find some very festive sweaters like the ones I found in my local thrift shop.

Or, you could make a unique holiday sweater using some patterned sweaters you already own or inexpensive ones from the thrift store like these.

To make an ugly ugly sweater,
you will need:
Gather anything with texture, sparkle, or anything that jingles.

Appliques are great for taking a boring sweater to the next level. I suggest working with the sweater itself to determine placement.

For my sister's sweater, I placed vintage appliques that she found at Savers in each square of her patchwork sweater. It just needed some Christmas light trim around the collar to put it over the top.

For my niece's sweater, Santa is front and center. I also added a bow and gifts to the collar.

Bells and Beads
Some sweaters need fewer embellishments (did I just say that?).

For my mum's sweater I added a bell to the teddy bear's hat and put a star on his tree.

The niece's sweater got bells, beads, and a little wrapped gift inside the design of the sweater.

Last years' sweater also got the bell and bead treatment. The trees went from this:

To this:

The same sweater also had some bears that needed some festivity with beads in the stars and a bow on the bear.

Pom Pom Fringe
This year, my sweater was all about the rainbow pom pom fringe. It just brings in color and bounce to any project. Then, I added some felt Christmas ornaments with the hangers cut off.

Oh, and don't forget the cuffs.

I'm ready to party!

I will be sharing my tips for the perfect ugly sweater poses. You'll see my family in their sweaters using such moves as: the lean, the head tilt, and the secret. Make sure you follow The Vintage Sheet Blog in some way so you don't miss it.

Are you going to an ugly sweater party this year?

Great ideas here, can't wait for the posing tips!
Here in the UK we just call them Christmas jumpers, they are still tacky as hell but we just don't say ugly (maybe it's to make sure we don't hurt their feeling!!!)

I remember my mother making me wear an ugly Christmas sweater to family functions. That of course was when it was uncool. Now people actually shop to find the ugliest over the top crazy sweaters. It's insane! I actually love the stockings. They're super cute. Nice job on the sweater. Thank you for sharing and linking up to Scraptastic Saturdays. This post has been shared via Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Have a wonderful weekend.

Love your ugly sweater ideas! Last year my sister and I made ugly sweatshirts for our family. The guys had bright red sweatshirts with giant moose heads on them and garland in their antlers and the girls got white ones with giant felt Christmas trees and pom poms. It was a hoot. Your sweater is awesome and what a great idea to use ready-made felt ornaments as appliques!

Oh boy, you've got me smiling! Can't wait to see the photo shoot. We tried the 'ugly sweater' theme with a group of club ladies one year. Didn't quite work. They are all older than me and they just wore things they had in their closet. lol! Definitely works better with the younger generation! Thanks for sharing with SYC.

The high to the side pony tail makes the look complete. The sweaters are delightfully tacky.
