How to Take a Totally Awesome Family Photo

Do family photos stress you out? My family has ditched out on taking family photos for years. This year we decided to do something different. This year we decided to take Totally Awesome Family Photos.

Oh yes! I made ugly sweaters for my mum, sister, niece, and me this year. Read all about that process here:
How to Make a Really Ugly Ugly Sweater
After getting the wardrobe situation figured out, the next thing to do is schedule an appointment at Target Photo Studios. Get ready with lots of makeup and side ponies. If you want to do an awesome family photo, here are a few poses you may want to use:

Awesome Family Photo Poses
Let's start the whole fam off with a move I call the Head Tilt. You can all tilt one direction or towards each other, There is no wrong tilt when you have a side ponytail.

Next, line up everyone and put your hand on your hip. Your teenage niece may try to put her elbow on your shoulder. That's okay, as long as a teenager is smiling in a photo, it's okay.

From left to right, my sister Amber, our mum, me, the niece

This is my favorite pose. I call it, The Secret. This involves leaning over your family, as if to tell them a secret. It must be a good one, judging from the look on my sister's face.

When all else fails, bring in props. Mustaches are always good. Glasses, sparkly lips and hats work well too.

Now, some special sister poses. Let's start by using your hand to make a shelf for your chin. Bonus points if your side ponies meet.

This last pose sent me into hysterical laughter.

To review: ugly sweater, side ponies, smiling teenagers, and awkward poses make totally awesome family photos. Speaking of awesome photos, the inspiration for our photo shoot was our favorite board game, Awkward Family Photos.

For more fun, check out the Awkward Family Photos website. Hilarious! Here's a photo of me, my mum and my sister back in the day. My sister and I had the chicken pox yet my mum is frowning. That's awkward.

OMG this is funny as hell! {pardon my french hehe} I told my family last week that I am tired of the every day poses the studios put you in and I want to have fun with it this year. We are either doing footy pjs or ugly sweaters! Whether they like it or not lol. I am def. going to check out your ugly sweater tutorial and make one for my business partner and I. That would make a great holiday card to send to our good customers lol.
Thanks so much for this post. It made me giggle :)

Ha ha ha!
This reminds me of a few years ago I got my husband and my Dr. Seuss footie pajamas that we wore on Christmas, even when all his extended family came over. His grandma, who has a great sense of humor, thought it was hilarious. She insisted we not change for the family photos, even though some other people were wearing Sunday best. I don't think I actually have a copy of those, but I know some of his extended family does.
